2011 Summer Studio Workshops

Advertising
Explore the advertising and communication graphics of San Francisco and document your discoveries in a book created by the team.

Graphic Design
Your ideas can go anywhere. Gain a fundamental understanding of the software and techniques used by designers all over the world to create the graphics, brands, and imagery we recognize and interact with daily. This workshop will introduce you to a world that often goes unrecognized — but never unnoticed.

Interior Design
Do you believe spaces speak? If you do, this workshop can help you learn to interpret what they are saying. Begin with a foundation in the history of interior design, and move on to its practice. Topics covered include (but are not limited to) color theory, pattern selection, and the client/designer relationship. If you hear a room’s voice, learn to help it speak to everyone.

Audio Production
Does sound speak to you? When your friends hear, do you feel? Even if you can’t explain it, explore your connection to sound this summer in our Audio Production workshop. You’ll be introduced to the fundamentals of audio production using many of the same tools the pros use. And when you’re done, you’ll have a solid foundation in the awesome science of sound.

Digital Filmmaking & Video Production
Discover the world of digital video production through the lens of actual filmmakers. Our faculty will guide you through pre-production planning, execution, and the post-production process of editing, special effects, and mastering. You’ll leave this fast-paced workshop with an understanding of how ideas transform into the films you know and love.

Game Art & Design
Bring your talents, drive, and inspiration and see how they fit in the multi-billion-dollar world of gaming. Working with the same tools the pros use, try your hand at rendering 3D environments and the characters that will inhabit them. This workshop will leave you with a taste of the possibility of a world just waiting for you to create it.

Media Arts & Animation
If you’re unsure about where your skills fit in the worlds of animation, design, and/or media arts, this is the workshop for you. Gain a fundamental understanding of the various roles involved in the production of long- and short-form animation, as well as the ever-growing world of animation on TV, seen in everything from nightly news broadcasts to live sporting events. You’ll leave this workshop knowing what it takes to bring an idea to broadcast, or to the Silver Screen.

Visual & Game Programming
Create low-polygon 3D models and learn the basics of programming movement, interaction, and physics through creating a simple 3D game.

Web Design & Interactive Media
This workshop is designed to give you an understanding of just how unique designing interactive web experiences can be. You’ll be introduced to the same tools the pros use while combining an aesthetic eye with the ever-expanding power of the web. This workshop is designed to provide you with a greater knowledge of how your ideas can come to life and what it takes to bring them there.

Fashion Design
Gain a deeper understanding of the world of fashion and sharpen your own design skills in this exciting, collaborative workshop. You’ll have an opportunity to develop your eye with lessons in color theory and pattern selection that will change the way you look at trends—from this year, last year, and many years ahead.

Fashion Marketing & Management
Learn about the constantly evolving world of fashion in a workshop designed to build a foundation in Fashion Marketing. Topics include supply and demand, retail operations, trend analysis, and sourcing. You’ll be introduced to all this and more as you study the science of selling style.

Culinary Arts
Get in the kitchen and see if you’ve got what it takes. This workshop will introduce you to basic knife skills, ingredient selection, and regional cooking styles. You’ll learn to execute several dishes and develop your own personal interpretation of some classics. Best of all, you’ll meet like-minded peers and see if the kitchen might be in your future.

Please note: Workshops are subject to change. All activities are fully structured and supervised. Mature and respectful behavior is expected at all times.

All workshops are non-credit bearing and do not transfer into any program offered at The Art Institute of California — San Francisco.
